I’ve recently had several conversations and have received a few emails about applying to NP school and the challenges that it poses. I realize that applying to NP school is stressful, and I’d like to offer you a few tips on how to successfully complete your applications. If you’ve purchased my book, “The Ultimate Nurse Practitioner Guidebook”, you can also reference this as well as there is a whole chapter about how to get accepted into a nurse practitioner program.
NP Program Application Tips
Stay organized! Make sure you know what is needed to complete each application. You can also make a checklist about this as this may help you better visualize what you’ve done and what still needs to be completed.
Write down dates applications are due. If there are any applications that accept early admissions, jot those dates down too. You’d hate to not get into your dream school as you missed the application deadline.
Get your letters of recommendation organized. Make sure that this is one of the first things you address when you’re in the application process. Give these people plenty of time to complete the letter so that you are not scrambling at the end to get these in. Remember, applications are often submitted in different formats. Some may need to be submitted online, while others may require a paper submission.
Spend quality time on your essays. Your personal essay/statement is one of the best ways you can distinguish yourself from other NP applicants. Really use this piece to highlight your qualities and why you want to be a nurse practitioner.
Get a professional opinion. If your resume needs tweaking, or your essays are subpar, consider getting professional help in these areas.
Don’t stress! Staying calm and collected during the process is key to maintaining your sanity! If you’re meant to be a nurse practitioner, it will happen. Just have faith in the process.
Remember, it’s important to give it your all when applying to NP school as this is a process you only want to go through once. So make it count!
